Hanging On The Wall EP

by Dark Arps

The Wheel 06:43
Come On In! 06:57

The EP starts off with its title track. "Hanging on the Wall" contrasts progressive techno basslines, shaped by signature Dark Arps grime LFO-controlled synths, with dark eastern melodies, and a mysterious vocal line that draws the listener into its world. "Biggest House in Town" blends bleepy synths and thick pads over a pounding straight 16 beat and choppy, acid-inspired basslines, with enough snarl to put the fear of God into wildlife. The track has a hypnotic groove for the first half, but a change four minutes in adds a manic intensity to its rising melodies.

"The Wheel" has a slightly softer beat, laced with quirky pops and delayed British vocal samples that give it a heady feel. Its crisp sounds percolate until the two-minute mark, when a techy bassline takes it to a heavier place, peaking with intense bad boy vocal manipulations and the "yeah / woo" from "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins (the sample made famous by the Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock classic "It Takes Two"… DJ Shadow would approve). "Come on In!" rounds out the EP with more of a sci-fi sound. Its pensive pads, menacing synth lead, and whooshing, tribal beat gives it such ferocity. It would have been perfect for a Matrix soundtrack. In these four barnburners alone, Bierman proves that his ranking as one of Vancouver's finest knob-twiddlers was well earned.
