D.A.O.C. Forever This is peak Dark Arps, pretty much the best Dark Arps song. Everything since then has been trying to capture the special magic of this release. The other stuff is still good, hell, we love it, but this EP is his Led Zeppelin IV. This is his Sheet One. This is Blood Sugar Sex Magick. This is the Chipmunk's Christmas album. Amazed this release didn't immediately lead to a world tour or a Juno. Definitely an overlooked masterpiece worth another listen. Favorite track: The Wheel.

about

The EP starts off with its title track. "Hanging on the Wall" contrasts progressive techno basslines, shaped by signature Dark Arps grime LFO-controlled synths, with dark eastern melodies, and a mysterious vocal line that draws the listener into its world. "Biggest House in Town" blends bleepy synths and thick pads over a pounding straight 16 beat and choppy, acid-inspired basslines, with enough snarl to put the fear of God into wildlife. The track has a hypnotic groove for the first half, but a change four minutes in adds a manic intensity to its rising melodies.

"The Wheel" has a slightly softer beat, laced with quirky pops and delayed British vocal samples that give it a heady feel. Its crisp sounds percolate until the two-minute mark, when a techy bassline takes it to a heavier place, peaking with intense bad boy vocal manipulations and the "yeah / woo" from "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins (the sample made famous by the Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock classic "It Takes Two"… DJ Shadow would approve). "Come on In!" rounds out the EP with more of a sci-fi sound. Its pensive pads, menacing synth lead, and whooshing, tribal beat gives it such ferocity. It would have been perfect for a Matrix soundtrack. In these four barnburners alone, Bierman proves that his ranking as one of Vancouver's finest knob-twiddlers was well earned.
